Abstract
The School of Engineering, University of Guelph, offers a final semester capstone design course to give graduating students a head start in the real world environment. Students work in teams on projects directly related to the needs of outside clients. Multi-disciplinary projects are encouraged with individual students working on the components of the project that are linked to their discipline. Examples include spine implants, robotic interfaces, stream restoration and membrane-based wastewater treatment. Throughout the project the students liase with the outside contact and regularly meet with a faculty advisor. In addition to meeting technical standards, the project must address social, environmental and aesthetic issues. At the project’s completion, the students prepare a written report and poster presentation. Faculty advisors evaluate the written reports and a team of practising engineers from the community evaluate the poster presentation.
