Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of one of the most important modes of transport for tourism: aviation. It introduces important tools, such as code-sharing and yield management, and discusses regulatory frameworks and developments. It becomes clear that alliances and partnerships are important strategic functions in the air transport sector, ranging from joint ventures to large airline alliances. Many countries have followed the lead of the USA in terms of deregulation, but many areas of air travel are still highly regulated. Regulating bodies, such as industry associations (IATA) and inter-governmental organizations (ICAO) are discussed.
