Abstract
Robert MacIver was born in Stornoway, Scotland, and began his professional career in Aberdeen, but spent most of his life in Canada and the United States at the universities of Toronto and Columbia. Though a prominent sociologist in his lifetime, his legacy since has been somewhat muted, possibly because his European style of sociology has featured less prominently in the subsequent development of US sociology (Brewer 2007: 10). Nevertheless, MacIver made a lasting and important contribution to the sociology of community, political sociology, and methodology.
