Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The duty of the copy editor is to see the wood for the trees. Eliminating infelicities from contributions alas! rarely compliant with the supplied template, airbrushing away the je m'entends taking for granted of what may not be so obvious to the less well-versed reader, all of this goes with the territory of vertical computer screen or horizontal hard copy. Occasionally, though, an issue surfaces which makes one question the normally clear-cut duty to correct what is perceived to be solecism or lack of focus. There seemed no problem to be anticipated, in proofing a volume of essays on the ‘twin’ cities of Montreal and Glasgow, with the gender of Montréal. The area near the Saint Lawrence river is known as le Vieux-Montréal, and when the (rare) definite article and (more common) indefinite are encountered in francophone writings on the city, they are always le and un. However, particularly...

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
