Abstract
Priced at £1 in 1911, Harold Foster’s Laughing Gas or Gags That Get Grins (left) was published simultaneously from London and from about 200 miles north, in Halifax, England. In a portrait (right) sketched in 1910, humorist Foster attempts neither to smile nor laugh. However, proving his “Magnet Gag Book Attracts All,” Foster cited a man who thanked a physician profusely, saying “your great medicine…helped me wonderfully.
