With the resources now available for learning anatomy by interactive computer models accessible with online websites (Kim et al. 2003; http://www.aip.org/dbis), the need for atlases of human anatomy would appear to become increasingly redundant. The demise of anatomy as a moribund subject of study is thankfully resurrected by the aesthetic artistry inherent in anatomical atlases. Indeed, the tribute paid on the opening page of this atlas: ‘Hic locus est ubi mors gaudet succurrere vitae’[Here is the place where death delights in resuscitating life (inscription above the Anatomical Theatre of Bologna)] revives the roots of anatomical studies. The advent of the 6th edition of this well-established atlas is indicative of its previous success, and this new edition surpasses its predecessors (reviewed in the Journal of Anatomy197: 514–515, 2000). The author successfully correlates the classical representation of anatomical drawings with the new demands of ‘imaging’ practice created by the technologies of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized axial tomography (CAT) and radiography. The combination of juxtaposed photographs, diagrams, radiographs, CAT scans, MRI tomograms, ultrasonographs and radioactive scintigraphs makes this atlas eminently suitable for clinicians as well as academic anatomists. A pertinent addendum to most drawings is a scale size, in percentages, relative to the actual size of adult specimens. The scant text, with American spelling, utilizes the Terminologica Anatomica, with synonyms and eponymous appelations that emphasizes the historical origins of anatomy's pioneers. A detailed index of eponyms, revealing the historiography of early anatomists will delight historians of anatomy. This set of atlases deserves to join the pantheon of illustrious treatises depicting human anatomy on the websites devoted to iconographic classic historical anatomy atlases (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/exhibition/historicalanatomies/home.html and http://link.library.utoronto.ca/anatomia/application/index.cfm). The publisher has done full justice to the contents by printing on acid-free glossy paper, which, together with the hard covers of two books, weighs in at a hefty eight pounds. These volumes are unquestionably worth their relatively modest price and are a bibliophile's delight.
