Abstract
Abstract From his magnum opus, The Civilizing Process (1939), to his many subsequent publications, as a human scientist interested in long term patterns of social change, Norbert Elias (1897–1990) showed us how the image of the disconnected self, or homo clausus , took hold of our imagination. He also considered implications of this shift and offered alternatives that present a more relational and correspondingly less confined and static view of ourselves.
