Abstract
Abstract Burnout is a syndrome of exhaustion, cynicism, and diminished professional efficacy closely associated with the work environment. Once established, the syndrome persists. Burnout arises in response to stressors within the work environment. It has a wide range of negative effects on job performance and personal well‐being. Burnout stands in contrast to the positive experience of work engagement, and consequently interventions to alleviate or reduce burnout may also be framed in terms of promoting engagement.
