Abstract
This entry concerns the concept of biopower and its historical development and recent application in contemporary societies, including biopower's intersection with affect, imagination, potentiality, and molecule technology. The analysis focuses on the contested perspectives on the continued relevance of this notion today. While some scholars argue that biopower, which Foucault developed to explain a mode of power emerging at the threshold of modernity, fails to capture the contemporary development, particularly of life sciences, others continue to relate to and find inspiration in Foucault's original writings on the subject.
