Abstract
En abordant deux nouvelles publiées par Louis Hémon, qui eut vingt ans pendant la période agitée de l’affaire Dreyfus, je montrerai comment l’écriture est fondatrice de sa conception radicale de la liberté et porte l’héritage militant de Zola. Car, marqué par cette affaire au tout début de sa carrière, Hémon prend ses distances par rapport à sa famille et, sans rompre avec elle, s’en éloigne géographiquement. De même, il se tient loin des salons littéraires parisiens et de leurs codes. Ayant conquis la liberté nécessaire pour écrire, l’auteur engage sa plume au service des laissés-pour-compte, ce qui ne l’empêche pas de voir aussi toutes leurs failles et leurs travers.
