Abstract
Abstract: The ongoing American obsession with the Holocaust has had a profound effect on the production and reception of Holocaust films in the United States. This article addresses some of the American reviews—several by Jewish Americans—of the 2008 British film The Reader that are critical of the ambiguous characterization of former SS guard Hanna Schmitz, the film's depictions of sexuality, and the absence of images of Holocaust violence. The author offers an alternative reading that provides some historical context and focuses more on protagonist Michael Berg, the theme of Germany's struggle to come to terms with its murderous past, and the conflict between law and morality in post-war Germany.
