Abstract
Life chances refer to the range of outcomes open to individuals who share structural locations. Max Weber coined the phrase in his seminal discussion of class, status, and party. Weber's initial usage was narrow, referring to possessions and income opportunities. Since then, usage has widened. While Weber's text fails to cite status honor as a cause for “life chances,” such usage is now very widespread, and life chance differences are attributed to race, to gender, and, more generally, to structural locations of all kinds, that is, to shared social circumstances that are hard, or even impossible, to alter at will. Thus, “life chances” has come to serve as a place‐holder, a sort of wild card, for the wide range of possibilities that are causally influenced by unequal or stratified life situations.
