Abstract
Abstract The Khwarazmian Empire grew from a regional dynasty of Turkic military governors – based in the arid plains and deserts east of the Caspian Sea – who first served the Great Seljuks in the 11th century. The Khwarazmshahs emerged as a successor state that held dominion over most of the eastern Islamic world in the 12th century, until the devastating Mongol invasions of the early 13th century. From traditional power bases like Urganj in the region of Khwarazm, the Khwarazmshahs ultimately grew to control major Islamic cosmopolitan centers like Bukhara, Samarkand, Nishapur, Herat, and Rayy, while at the same time patronizing religious and scientific scholarship.
