Abstract
This entry analyzes the maquiladora export industry (Industria maquiladora de exportación, IME) in Mexico from 1965 until its conclusion (in compliance with the Free Trade Agreement between Mexico, the United States, and Canada) as a temporary import regime in 2006. The IME has been the most important form of industrial development in northern Mexico, and particularly during the 1980s and 1990s this industry underwent significant changes, mainly in terms of the coexistence of assembly and manufacturing activities. Currently, though its legal standing has changed, it remains as an export industry linked to global production chains.
