Abstract
The Cover photo comes from the paper by van Overdam et al. showing Vitreous Wiping, a new technique for removal of vitreous cortex remnants during vitrectomy. Toke Bek in Aarhus was the 2018 recipient of the Acta Gold Medal at the Nordic Congress of Ophthalmology. He traces the path from bench to bedside; from studying vascular regulations in pigs to pharmacologic effect in patients. Detiger et al. in the Netherlands conclude that rituximab is the most effective biologic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug in IgG4-related orbital disease. Habot-Wilner et al. in Israel and USA advocate suprachoroidal administration for drugs, stem cells and genes. Sandfeld et al. in Denmark found visual acuity at distance with the use of LogMAR-based charts to be the optimal screening tool for preschool vision screening. Manta et al. in Stockholm found optic disc coloboma to be the second most common optic disc malformation in children after optic nerve hypoplasia. Ocular and systemic comorbidity was common. Rasul and Kessel in Denmark warn that anterior polar cataract is highly amblyogenic. It represents an anomaly in global eye development resulting in reduced axial length. Haugen and Nepstad in Bergen recommend a single, standardized recession of the ipsilateral inferior oblique muscle for trochlear nerve palsy. Bak-Nielsen report that keratoconus patients have a higher risk of allergic rhinitis, asthma, atopic dermatitis and depression. They differ in some sociodemographic factors but do not have excess mortality compared with controls. Thomseth et al. in Denmark found antazoline–naphazoline eye drops to be safe in pregnancy. Pärssinen and Kauppinen in Finland report that a third of the children receiving first spectacles for myopia at about age 10 high myopia later. Parental myopia, age at baseline, myopic progression, reading and close work and less outdoor activities in childhood were associated with adulthood high myopia. Jakobsen et al. in Denmark and Iceland found patients with AMD to have higher retinal arteriolar oxygen saturation as compared to normal eyes. Geneid et al. in Finland found strong associations between larger retinal vessel diameter and thicker retinal nerve fibre layer. Ilmarinen et al. in Finland and Germany studied human embryonic stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelial cells after transplantation. Schatz et al. in Germany observed minor ERG irregularities following ocriplasmin injection. Spooner et al. in Sidney were pleased with aflibercept for treatment-resistant nAMD. Good anatomical and stable functional responses are achievable with continued long-term therapy. Wu et al. in Taiwan suggest that patients with chronic hepatitis B virus infection are at risk to develop AMD and that hepatitis B virus infection may accelerate the progression of AMD. Quellec et al. in Switzerland, France, UK and USA found a support vector machine learning algorithm to be as effective as retina specialists in detecting activity in wet AMD on OCT images. Cheung et al. in Singapore, China, Japan and Germany found aflibercept treatment to be effective in myopic macular degeneration. Shu et al. in Japan report that scleral buckling and vitrectomy were equally popular for young patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment and had similar primary anatomical reattachment rates. Yamada et al. in Japan worry about light-induced retinal damage in silicone-filled eyes due to the refractive properties. They suggest light filters. van Overdam et al. in Rotterdam propose that vitreoschisis-induced vitreous cortex remnants can be removed effectively and safely from the retinal surface by Vitreous Wiping. They provide the cover photo of this issue. Deschamps et al. in France found macular neuroretinopathy in a few patients with acute optic neuritis. Broniek-Kowalik et al. in Poland recommend anterior segment optical coherence tomography to detect copper deposits forming the Kayser–Fleischer ring Wilson disease. Pantalon et al. in Austria, Romania and Singapore used ultrahigh-resolution OCT to assess epithelial wound and its healing by 3D mapping and observe microarchitectural changes in early phases of epithelial healing. Chun et al. in Korea found four different regions of the integrated binocular visual field to have similar impact on vision-related quality of life in glaucoma patients. Abu El-Asrar et al. in Saudi Arabia and Belgium found high levels of IL-19 in endogenous uveitis, particularly in HLA-B27- associated uveitis. Tian et al. in Switzerland found reduced central vessel density in intermediate uveitis and vasculitis present and blame cystoid macular oedema. Keren et al. Israel found that intravenous aminobisphosphonates can cause orbital and ocular inflammation. Park and Baek in Korea found incomplete blinking and loss of Meibomian gland structure in the upper eyelid were more prominent in thyroid eye disease patients than in dry eye patients. Sever in Turkey and Morén et al. in Sweden debate whether gastric bypass affects the risk of diabetic retinopathy. Bernardo et al. in Italy compare standard and accelerated cross-linking in keratoconus management. Tuuminen et al. introduce ‘Choosing Wisely’ recommendations in Finland for glaucoma and wet age-related macular degeneration. Sirbikaite and Næser in Denmark found a 1.4 mmHg reduction of IOP after cataract surgery. Kaizu et al. in Japan document capillary dropout in deep capillary plexus in early diabetic retinopathy. Hujanen et al. in Finland divided aflibercept into prefilled syringes and found this to be safe and safe money. Yan et al. in China recommend conbercept for treatment of choroidal neovascularization secondary to pathologic myopia.
