Abstract
Abstract Since the early 1990s, the numbers of single fathers has slowly and consistently increased in many western countries, including the United States and Canada. In this field of scholarship and research, there is some debate about the meanings and the everyday practices of “single fathers” and how these differ from, or are similar to, those of “single mothers.” This entry defines and explores the concept of the “single father” in broad terms within increasingly diverse family forms and discusses single fathers who vary in their marital status, cohabitation status, and resident status; these include fathers who have sole custody or joint custody, noncustodial fathers, widowed or unmarried fathers, and men who are residential or nonresidential single fathers.
