Abstract
A core figure in the Pre‐Raphaelite movement and a major influence on aestheticism, symbolism, and the Arts and Crafts movement, Dante Gabriel Rossetti was the Victorian period's most important poet‐painter. A devotee of female beauty, he peopled his poems and pictures with feminine types as diverse as the Virgin Mary, the “fallen women,” and the femme fatale , as well as with depictions of the women – Elizabeth Siddal, Fanny Cornforth, Jane Morris – with whom he had passionate and fraught relationships. Drawing on Dante, Titian, Malory, and others, he developed a distinctive poetic and pictorial idiom in which to explore the relationship between the divine and the human in the realm of sexual love and to ponder the ultimate questions of human existence, themes that lie at the heart of his sonnet sequence The House of Life .
