Abstract
On prétend, en général, qu’il n’y avait pas de navigation hivernale en Méditerranée. Plusieurs auteurs anciens répètent après Hésiode qu’il y avait un temps bien déterminé pour les voyages en mer. Cependant il appert que des traversées avaient bel et bien lieu en dehors de cette période: les textes de Thucydide et d’Aratus, parmi tant d’autres, démontrent que les voyages d’hiver n’étaient pas exceptionnels, surtout en temps de guerre. Les navires de guerre et les bateaux de commerce ne suivaient pas les mêmes itinéraires. Comme les navires militaries suivaient le littoral, et qu’ils étaient chaque nuit tirés à sec, il était possible de les utiliser tout au long de l’année, au gré des besoins.
