Abstract
Subject The Japanese economy. Significance The Cabinet Office reported on November 14 that the Japanese economy grew at a 2.2% annualised pace in the July-September quarter, up from 0.7% in the previous quarter. Growth was ahead of potential growth, recently estimated at 0.2% by the Bank of Japan (BoJ) and 0.3% by the Cabinet Office. However, the economy did not grow at all when exports are excluded and these enjoyed a temporary boost from a large shipment of smartphone parts, helping them to grow at the fastest pace in a year. Impacts Trump's rejection of the Trans-Pacific Partnership negates a key success of the Abe government's policy and dampens Japan’s trade outlook. Government debt has risen to more than 200% of GDP, and ‘helicopter money’ might sharply increase this, damaging financial stability. Japan’s strong foothold in global electronics positions it well both to lead and to benefit from progress in artificial intelligence.
