Einige Autoimmunerkrankungen kommen bei Frauen häufiger vor als bei Männern – was vermuten lässt, dass Geschlechtshormone bei der Entstehung beteiligt sind. Andere Studien weisen darauf hin, dass die Darmflora das Immunsystem reguliert. Wie diese beiden Faktoren zusammenhängen, untersuchten Janet G.M. Markle und ihre Kollegen vom Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute in Toronto, Kanada, anhand von Experimenten mit Mäusen.
