Dans cet article, l’auteure s’interroge de façon critique sur le sens que revêtent les propositions de développement durable dans un contexte néolibéral et néoconservateur actuellement en place au Canada. Elle montre que les orientations du développement dans ce pays, tout comme d’ailleurs au Mexique d’où elle tire quelques exemples supplémentaires, résultent en grande partie du Consensus de Washington, largement défavorable aux femmes, et qu’elles s’alignent actuellement sur les Objectifs du Millénaire pour le développement. En gros, l’auteure s’interroge sur les contradictions entre, d’une part, des consignes en faveur de l’égalité des femmes et d’un développement « efficace » et, d’autre part, les ressources minimales qui y sont consacrées. Elle estime que le discours sur l’égalité des femmes est discutable, notamment parce qu’il instrumentalise ces dernières et qu’il se fait au détriment de leurs droits.
