Abstract
Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare, deep-seated, destructive infection of the skin, subcutaneous tissues, and superficial fascia characterized by a rapid clinical course ranging from hours to days. All animals presenting with NF are severe to excruciatingly painful upon presentation, the degree of which increases in intensity following surgical debridement. Antimicrobial therapy should commence immediately following sample collection and is based on cytological or Gram stain findings, as organism identification cannot often be predicted on clinical presentation, regardless of patient appearance. Additional adjunctive therapies used for wound management following surgical debridement include vacuum-assisted wound closure (VAC) and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). With NF in mind, avoidance of specific adverse treatments mentioned in this chapter, vigilance in monitoring, and instituting appropriate diagnostic methods and antibiotic therapy with immediate surgical intervention, patients with NF can recover from this life-threatening condition.
