Abstract
The Kellogg–Briand Pact was signed in Paris on August 27, 1928. Fifteen nations agreed to renounce war “as an instrument of national policy,” and to settle all disputes by “pacific means.” Eventually most of the international community committed themselves by treaty to the principle of making war illegal. United States Secretary of State Frank B. Kellogg was given the Nobel Peace Prize for 1929 for his part in drafting the treaty. The treaty was regarded by many as the beginning of a new era of permanent peace.
