Abstract
Sexuopharmaceutical drugs and the industry that surrounds them emerged following the blockbuster success of Viagra in the late 1990s. This was an opportune social and economic period for such drugs to flourish. Since then, more drugs for sexual enhancement have been developed for men; and the race to find an equivalent drug for women continues. Almost a decade and a half later, no drug of this kind has proven to be safe and effective in addressing a large margin of women's sexual difficulties. While key opinion leaders in the sexuopharmaceutical industry frame these drugs as playing a significant role in maintaining health and wellness or as potentially leveling the sexual playing field between men and women, feminist critics argue that the drugs offer band‐aid solutions to issues that are interpersonal, social, economic, and political in nature. They argue that the sexuopharmaceutical industry is motivated primarily by profit, not by pleasure for others.
