Abstract
Elizabeth Jolley, as Laurie Clancy has written, “had perhaps the most meteoric rise of any Australian writer in the last quarter of the twentieth century.” An unpublished writer in the UK, she published with increasing frequency after arriving in Australia in 1959, producing 15 novels and nine books of essays, stories, radio plays, and poems between 1976 and 2006, winning every major Australian prize for fiction, including the Miles Franklin Award. Her civic honors included the Order of Australia and being declared an Australian National Living Treasure in 1997; her academic recognition included four honorary doctorates and a professorship in creative writing. Well before she died on February 13, 2007, she was regarded as one of Australia's finest novelists – indeed, was often compared to Patrick White – and to many she was also Australia's best‐loved writer.
