Abstract
Abstract Pedophilia refers to the strong, enduring sexual interest in or sexual preference for children. Pedophilia is distinct from the overt sexual abuse of children: there are pedophilic individuals who never sexually contact a child, and there exist people who have sexually contacted a child despite preferring adults as sexual partners. There is no known method of converting pedophiles into nonpedophiles. Multiple talk‐based therapies have been attempted, but without strong evidence of success. Physical castration and sex‐drive‐reducing medications (“chemical castration”) have also been applied to suppress (yet not eliminate) pedophilia. Researchers using MRI and other techniques have reported differences in brain structure between pedophilic and nonpedophilic individuals and have associated pedophilia with prenatal development but the causes of those differences remain unknown
