Abstract
Abstract The term “antifeminism” refers to the long tradition of misogynist and misogamist writing in medieval Europe, a tradition that originated primarily with the Roman Catholic Church's struggle to establish a celibate priesthood, and that culminated in the early modern period in a wide‐ranging debate about the nature and roles of women. Much medieval antifeminist writing was produced by clerics, much of it is satirical, and all of it is characterized by the repetition of proverbial and stereotypical complaints about women.
