Saluons la publication de ce livre qui complète les travaux classiques mais anciens sur l'esclavage à Mexico de Gonzalo Aguirre Beltrán et de Colin A. Palmer.Bien que l'influence africaine en Nouvelle-Espagne et surtout dans la capitale soit connue depuis longtemps, les préjugés ont souvent la peau dure et l'image d'une ville peuplée essentiellement d'Indiens et de métis prévaut encore sur celle d'une cité marquée par la présence massive de Noirs.Les chiffres parlent d'eux-mêmes puisqu'au milieu du XVII e siècle, limite temporelle que l'auteur s'est assignée, il y avait à Mexico 35 089 Africains et plus de 116 000 personnes, nées sur le sol mexicain et d'ascendance africaine.Avec la cessation de la traite négrière, la population servile de la Nouvelle-Espagne déclina fortement.Mais en revanche, la population libre de couleur ne cessa de s'accroître, constituant au début du XIX e siècle les 10 % de la population urbaine.L'intérêt du livre de H. Bennett est justement de prendre en compte non seulement la situation des esclaves mais aussi celle des affranchis et des libres, supérieurs en nombre en raison de la fréquence de la manumission, accordée par les maîtres mais surtout, il est bon de le préciser, obtenue par l'effort pécuniaire des esclaves eux-mêmes ou de leur famille qui avaient le droit de se « racheter ».
