Abstract
. Wheatears are small but conspicuous birds that evolved on the African continent. They are birds of open landscapes, distributed predominantly in semiarid or arid regions of Africa, the Middle East, and the western parts of central Asia. One species also spread above the Arctic Circle, and expanded its distribution into southeastern Canada and Alaska. The greatest diversity of Oenanthe species is found in the Mediterranean region. The Howard and Moore Complete Checklist of the Birds of the World (Dickinson 2003) lists 22 species of wheatears, and the Handbook of the Birds of the World (del Hoyo et al. 2005) recognizes 21 species. Panov concludes that there are ''about 20 species'' of wheatears, and he describes 12 species and 2 superspecies in this monograph.
