Abstract
S’intéressant à l’imaginaire religieux des jeunes Québécois, notre formulons l’hypothèse qu’après avoir été « religion nationale » jusqu’à la Révolution tranquille (1960-70) pour ensuite devenir une « religion culturelle » (1970-2000), le catholicisme québécois entrerait progressivement dans une nouvelle phase. S’il est trop tôt, à l’évidence, pour identifier les formes qu’il prendra, des indicateurs – tant locaux, mondiaux que « transreligieux » – nous permettent de constater l’émergence d’un catholicisme de marché chez les jeunes. Ainsi, l’exculturation (Hervieux-Léger, 2003) constatée au Québec comme ailleurs aurait son revers. Nous assisterions, simultanément, à une reconnexion du catholicisme à la culture de la société de consommation. En fait, ces mutations ne seraient pas tant des ruptures que des processus continus, en cascades, dont le déclencheur « originel » pourrait être associé au processus de modernisation qui s’opère dès la fin du XIXe siècle au Québec. Ainsi, bien que l’univers religieux des jeunes soit notre objet, nous tenions à inscrire notre exploration dans un regard plus large sur le religieux et la religion; et ce, pour mieux comprendre religieux et la jeunesse qui est toujours le produit d’une époque, une construction sociale dépendante du monde adulte.
