Abstract
An upsurge in dieting was spurred by a historical shift in the idealization of thinness and the emergence of the obesity epidemic that occurred in the last quarter of the twentieth century, especially in Western countries. Factors that are central to the development of dieting behavior include various sociocultural influences and developmental processes. These variables affect those of different gender and sexual orientations in diverse ways and these differences can be instrumental in the formation of dieting behavior.
