Abstract
Thyroid disease is common and affects about 10–15% of the adult female population and a smaller percentage of adult males. This gender-specific prevalence results from the underlying autoimmune mechanism for the most common forms of thyroid disease, which include both Graves’ and Hashimoto’s disease (Volpe 1994 ). Excessive production or depletion of thyroxine produce changes in cardiac contractility, myocardial oxygen consumption, cardiac output, blood pressure, and systemic vascular resistance (Kahaly and Dillmann 2005 ; Biondi et al. 2002 ). Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism therefore cause cardiac dysfunction that includes arrhythmias. Marked sinus tachycardia at rest and atrial fibrillation are observed with hyperthyroidism and ventricular arrhythmias with hypothyroidism.
