Abstract
This year Acta is moving further into the electronic age. In this issue of Acta about half of the material is printed on paper and the other half is published electronically only. All of this material is available electronically on http://www.actaophthalmolgica.com and all of it will be reviewed quickly in this column. The cover illustration comes from the letter by Bloch and Larsen in Copenhagen published in the electronic part of this issue. It shows angioid streaks and the contraction of subfoveal choroidal neovascularization following ranibizumab treatment. Stefansson considers the oxygen physiology of retinopathy of prematurity and proposes that this disease may be eliminated through precise control of retinal oxygen physiology in the newborn. Kumar in England discusses local anesthesia of the eye and orbit. Rasmussen et al. in Copenhagen report that phantom pain is relatively common after enucleation. Suesskind et al. in Germany counted circulating melanoma cells in peripheral blood of patients with uveal melanoma. Various treatments did not influence number of circulating melanoma cells. Grauslund et al. in Odense found that type 1 diabetic patients have cataract surgery approximately 20 years earlier than general population. Sjöstrand et al. in Gothenburg found that children treated for bilateral congenital cataract have subnormal vision which plateaus at 7 years of age. Shiraya et al. in Tokyo point out that yellow tinted intraocular lenses reduce the transmission of therapeutic laser light to the retina, especially in the blue and green part of the spectrum. Lee et al. in Korea compare 3 different aspheric intraocular lenses and found visual acuity to be unaffected while a difference could be measured in spherical aberration and contract sensitivity. Auw-Haedrich et al. in Germany and Switzerland identified 3 different stages of epithelial immunological characteristics in eyes with congenital aniridia and pemphigoid. Coskunseven et al. in Turkey, Greece and Serbia report a significant complications in 6% of cases where stromal corneal rings were implanted using a femtosecond laser in patients with keratoconus. Guedes et al. in Brazil found that intraoperative mitomycin C is helpful in non-penetrating deep sclerectomy. The operation is less successful in patients with high preoperative intra-ocular pressure. Törnquist et al. in Sweden found that the rarebit visual field is impaired following stem-cell transplantation in childhood. Meyer et al. in Germany, Switzerland and Brazil report five retinal detachments out of 36 000 intravitreal anti VEGF injections, which is an incidence of 0.01 per injection. Schmidinger et al. in Vienna found that intravitreal injections of bevacizumab (Avastin) reduce retinal new vessels in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy or about 3 months. They suggest that this may be used to control persistent new blood vessels following panretinal photocoagulation. Ehlken et al. in Germany found that Ephrin ligands and Eph receptors are involved in oxygen induced proliferative retinopathy and may play a role in treatment. Makdoumi and Crafoord in Örebro contribute a series of cases with vasoproliferative retinal tumours treated with cryotherapy, photocoagulation and intravitreal injections. Mavrikakis and Lam in Canada report a case of macular schisis and detachment with a large optic nerve head cup. Goldschmidt and Fledelius contribute an electronic supplement with this issue of Acta reporting on clinical features of high myopia. A Danish cohort study of high myopia cases followed from age 14 to age 60. This seminal publication reports long-term follow-up of myopia and contributes uniquely to the understanding of the development and etiology of high myopia. Sehi in Florida reviews the usefulness and limitations of confocal scanning laser Doppler flowmetry at the optic disc. Brión et al. in Spain and USA found that CFH and ARMS2 genes contribute independently to AMD in a Spanish cohort. Garcia-Martin et al. in Spain found good repeatability of retinal and retinal nerve fibre layer thickness measurements using Cirrus ocular coherence tomography. Petrovski et al. in Hungary and Norway studied the clearing mechanism of dying cells in the retina by the retinal pigment epithelium and found that ARPE-19 cells are more efficient than macrophages in clearing dead cell material, in vitro. Shin et al. in Korea report that retinal structure as seen on ocular coherence tomography and visual acuity may predict final visual outcome in patients with retinal vein occlusion. Toklu et al. in Turkey report decreased retinal blood flow velocity in central retinal artery and posterior ciliary arteries following bevacizumab (Avastin) injections. Falkner-Radler et al. in Vienna recommend 360° endolaser treatment before silicone oil removal. Overall 91% patients had attached retina following silicone oil removal. Kim et al. in Korea recommend spectral domain optical coherence tomography to diagnose occult macular dystrophy. Stankiewicz et al. in Poland and USA found that adding dorzolamide to bimatoprost treatment improved intraocular pressure control. Malukiewicz et al. in Poland confirmed that LOXL1 gene is associated with pseudoexfoliation in Poland as has previously been found in Iceland, Sweden and other countries. Galichanin et al. in Sweden and China describe a new rat restrainer for ophthalmic research. Bai et al. in China and Germany report on a worrying delay of diagnosis and therapy of retinoblastoma in Chinese children. Petznick et al. in Australia collected tear fluid from cats, either basal tear production or flushing with installation of saline and report that both techniques are useful for studying immunoglobulin and enzyme concentration in tear fluid. Nguyen et al. in Germany compared two training methods with regard to reading speed. Both rapid serial visual presentation and sensomotoric training had limited effect in general but some individual patients showed significant benefit. Lavinsky et al. in Brazil used autofluorescence to better identify damaged retinal pigment epithelium following ocular trauma. Larsen et al. in Århus report subretinal neovascularization in anetoderma, which is a disease of elastic connective tissue. Jonas et al. in Germany report good results of cryotherapy of retinal horse shoe tears. Sørensen and Kemp in Denmark suggest that intravitreal ranibizumab should be considered also in patients with very low vision and neovascular age-related macular degeneration. Grosso and Panico in Italy had two post operative retinal detachments in 166 23-gauge vitrectomy cases. Fauser et al. in Germany discuss intraocular inflammation following anti-VEGF injections and the diagnostic dilemma in distinguishing between infections and sterile inflammation. Micieli et al. in Canada describe a case of third nerve palsy following intravitreal anti-VEGF injections. Williams et al. in Britain found a delayed retinal breaks in 4% of cases following acute symptomatic posterior vitreous detachment and recommend follow-up examinations. Jackson et al. in Britain suggest a seasonal influence on wet age-related macular degeneration. Bloch and Larsen report on a case of angioid streaks and subfoveal neovascularization treated with ranibizumab. This case is illustrated on the cover of the journal. Weihong et al. in China studied macular thickness in normal Chinese with optical coherence tomography. Jonas et al. in Germany and China used intravitreal bevacizumab for parapapillary choroidal neovascularization in age-related macular degeneration with good results.
