Para fabricar papel a partir de aparas é preciso separar as fibras secundárias de celulose dos agregados e contaminantes do papel. Devido às limitações do processo, até 30 % das fibras são perdidas na forma de resíduo, sobretudo na etapa de remoção da tinta. O resíduo de papel, que por suas características é também chamado de material argilo-fibroso, é composto principalmente por fibras de celulose, argila e calcita. Este resíduo vem sendo estudado como material geotécnico alternativo e vários projetos foram executados, in - cluin do projetos de larga escala no campo. Este trabalho apresenta os resultados de estudos realizados em dois resí duos da indústria de papel brasileira e canadense. Os estudos aqui apresentados mostram o grande po ten - cial de utilização de subprodutos da reciclagem de papel como material de recobrimento, seja em aterros sani - tá rios ou em sítios de mineração.
