Abstract
Abstract Decluttering aims at clearing out the mess, disorder, and complications that often accompany material accumulation and also nonmaterial accumulation on computer hard drives and corporate records. Prior to decluttering, individuals may not realize that others judge their environment as cluttered or overcrowded. After initial decluttering, the space – physical and/or mental – has been transformed from disordered and messy to ordered and tidy and a plan is set in place to keep it so. As a social practice, decluttering is deeply rooted in the social, cultural, and symbolic presentation of how one's life and home should be. In popular culture, television shows such as Hoarders and The Learning Channel's website “Hoarding: Buried Alive,” combined with numerous decluttering makeover shows, reiterate the social imperative to declutter.
