Abstract
The adventus Saxonum refers to the arrival of Germanic settlers to Britain in the fifth century, and to the subsequent transition from late Roman Britain to Anglo‐Saxon England. The main narratives of the adventus (found in Gildas, Bede, the Historia Brittonum , and the Anglo‐Saxon Chronicle ) all combine some factual information with fictional elements drawn from origin legends. The adventus offered the Anglo‐Saxons a story of origins that helped bolster group identity and a sense of belonging. The memory of the adventus remained alive throughout the Anglo‐Saxon period, thanks to the genealogies tracing the descent of Anglo‐Saxon dynastic houses to ancestors who took part in the adventus . The adventus is a leitmotif in the literary production of the Anglo‐Saxons, and some of its legendary elements invite parallels with Beowulf .
