Abstract
We report a broadband microwave frequency converterbased on a coherent Kerr optical micro-comb generatedby an integrated micro-ring resonator. The coherent micro-combdisplays features that are consistent with soliton crystal dynamicswith a free spectral range of 48.9 GHz.We use this to demonstratea high-performancemillimeter-wave local oscillator for microwavefrequency conversion. We experimentally verify the microwaveperformance up to 40 GHz, achieving a ratio of −6.8 dB betweenoutput radio frequency power and intermediate frequency powerand a spurious suppression ratio of >43.5 dB. The experimentalresults show good agreement with theory and verify the effectivenessof microwave frequency converters based on coherent opticalmicro-combs, with the ability to achieve reduced size, complexity,and potential cost.
