Abstract
This entry addresses the context and status of research pertaining to gay male pornography (GMP). A brief historical snapshot is included as well as an overview of the key frameworks that have been employed to study this medium. Where heterosexual pornography has a rich and diverse literature, scant empirical attention has been directed to GMP, with much of the research embracing a simplistic pro‐ or anti‐pornography stance. However, through eclectic and interpretative approaches, the study of GMP has diversified and gained unforeseen complexities resulting in a more nuanced understanding of those who consume GMP and on the medium itself.
