Abstract
Abstract Hegemony, the process through which rule or dominance takes place involving the consent of the ruled, is a concept that was most fully elaborated by the early 20th‐century revolutionary Antonio Gramsci. Since then, it has been used to emphasize the interdependency of coercive and consensual forms of power, articulate the complex relationship between the state and civil society, and to explain why subaltern classes have not overthrown bourgeois political economic orders. Although, in recent years, the concept has been rejected by those theorizing the emergence of a post‐hegemonic era, hegemony remains an important tool for analysts and activists.
