Abstract
The adjective “postindustrial” was first employed by Daniel Bell in The Coming of Post‐Industrial Society . Bell argued that, by the late twentieth century, North American and Western European societies had undergone a fundamental shift driven by a transition of the economic base away from manufacturing employment toward employment in service occupations. In this context, knowledge had become the primary driver of economic growth and change. The form and character of postindustrial cities stem from the changes wrought by these profound structural transformations. On the one hand, there are changes forced by deindustrialization while, on the other, there are the adaptations reflecting the emergence of new industries and forms of work.
