Abstract
Après s’être vigoureusement raffermie au sortir de la légère récession de l’an dernier, l’activité économique au Canada semble se poursuivre sur son élan, contrairement aux États-Unis. La croissance de l’emploi est restée forte et devrait le demeurer, mais à un rythme plus lent. Bien que certains signes d’affaiblissement soient récemment apparus, en partie en liaison avec les incertitudes mondiales, on devrait avoir l’assurance, grâce à l’expansion soutenue de la demande de consommation et à une nouvelle reprise de l’investissement des entreprises, que toute modération de l’activité sera limitée etde courtedurée, et que la croissance retrouvera des taux supérieurs au potentiel à un moment ou à un autre l’an prochain. L’excédent budgétaire s’est sensiblement contracté et devrait rester modéré au cours des prochaines années, la marge de manoeuvre disponible pour engager de nouvelles dépenses étant de ce fait étroite. La politique monétaire est toujours expansionniste. L’économie tournant déjà pratiquement à pleine capacité et l’inflation de base se situant presque au sommet de la fourchette d’objectif, un durcissement progressif mais régulier de la politique monétaire sera nécessaire pour maîtriser les pressions exercées sur les prix.
