Abstract
Abstract Class is a concept that has been widely used in the social sciences to refer to social divisions based on the control over resources such as wealth and income. In communication studies, class divisions are identified with control over the means of communication, including media and information technology. Class can be understood as a category that divides people into discrete units, as a social relation that describes the connections among class categories, and as a formation whereby people identify with and act on their class position, resulting in class consciousness. Communication research on class is largely categorical but increasingly draws from relational and formational approaches. Debates about knowledge labor illuminate contemporary research on class.
