Abstract
The Louisiana Purchase in 1803 was President Thomas Jefferson's greatest diplomatic triumph, securing control of the Mississippi River, doubling the size of the United States, and steering the nation towards transcontinental expansion in defiance of Spain and Britain. Louisiana had been a colony of France in the Mississippi River Valley, founded in the seventeenth century and ceded to Spain during the Seven Years' War. In 1800 the region was returned to France. This was seen as a threat to the flow of American goods down the Mississippi and through the port of New Orleans. Napoleon's failure to occupy Louisiana in 1802–3, the probability of a return to war in Europe in 1803, and the prospect of a British seizure of the province facilitated its pre‐emptory sale to the United States.
