Abstract
Robert Stebbins, who coined the term “positive sociology,” defines it as the study of what people do to organize their lives such that those lives become, in combination, substantially rewarding, satisfying, and fulfilling (Stebbins 2009). This proposed new branch of sociology follows the lead of the only two fields in the social sciences, notably positive psychology and leisure studies, to move beyond the traditional concentration on life's many problems to focus intensely on how, why, and when people pursue those things in life they desire, the things they do to make their existence attractive, worth living. From this it should be clear that positive sociology has nothing to do with methodological positivism, which is a research approach, not a field of inquiry.
