Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Penobscot Indians hung the roots around the house to keep away disease; the plant has been proven to contain insect-repellant and antiseptic compounds. Sassafras roots, also containing safrole, were similarly used by North American Indians. Commercial plantings have produced a ton of root per acre. Russians, apparently without scientific justification, regard the plant as a specific for hydrophobia, hence the name mad-dog weed. The wild form ranges to Canada, bearing smaller tubers, farther from the mother plant, decreasing their value as food, and increasing their liabilities as weeds. The mustard family, in addition, contains isothiocyanatelike compounds that have been suggested to prevent cancer. Geese eat peppergrass plants, finches eat the seed, rats eat the pods and leaves, and deer browse the plant. Containing the antiseptic and antitumor compound emodin, the plant is viewed as a prophylactic in epidemics in China.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
