Abstract
Gender differences in aggression may seem quite obvious, and in fact, gender is one of the strongest predictors of aggression and violence. However, the relation between gender and aggression can be quite complex when we consider the developmental stage, types of conflicts, forms of aggression, whether the opponent is male or female, the motives, the attitudes toward aggression, and the perceived consequences of aggression. In addition to establishing what gender differences may exist, there is the task of determining how such differences occurred in the first place. Much research on the causality of gender differences has focused on biological or socialization hypotheses; however, it is reasonable that biological and social factors interact to produce aggressive behavior.
