Abstract
Abstract Because of the political and military conflicts of the first half of the twentieth century, the history of German modernism in the early years of the century was often presented as a phenomenon without a theoretical lineage. Only in the last quarter of the century did the writings of Gottfried Semper become known and appreciated. This chapter attempts to portray the main lines of Semper's thought and the importance of his theoretical legacy to the development of German modernism.
