A fin du XXe siècle, tandis qu’en Europe la chute du mur de Berlin et l'entrée en vigueur des accords de Schengen permettent l’ouverture des frontières au sein de l’Union Européenne, outre Atlantique est signé un Accord de Libre Échange Nord-Américain entre le Canada, le Mexique et les États-Unis. La notion de frontière, espace d'échanges mais aussi de tous les périls, se voit ainsi revisitée. Avec cette nouvelle livraison, le numéro 53 de la revue AMÉRICA poursuit une réflexion au long cours sur ce sujet, en proposant de nouvelles perspectives sur les imaginaires littéraires de la frontière nord du Mexique, laquelle a longtemps concentré la problématique Nord-Sud, ainsi que sur ceux d'autres frontières latino-américaines, extra ou intra-territoriales. La question de la frontière est également posée en termes linguistiques — une Nation, une langue ? — ou encore anthropologiques et artistiques, lorsqu’il s'agit de recueillir les paroles migrantes ou de s'interroger sur l'existence d'une esthétique de la frontière.
