Abstract
Hair is a powerful symbol of the self and, especially for women, of sexuality. Hair is personal, since it grows from the body; yet it is public, and highly malleable in terms of color, style, and length, or absence. Hair may signal age, gender, occupational type, status, faith and religiosity, and sexuality. As it is malleable it is particularly easy to signify changes in personal or group identity by it, as well as being a component part of erotic capital.
