Abstract
There are more than four million Chinese Americans in the United States. Their achievements as an ethnic group have led to them being dubbed a “model minority” but that belies the fact that this successful integration has been hard won. Early Chinese immigrants faced harsh conditions of poverty and discrimination and legal measures that served to prevent their immigration and flourishing. Chinese Americans reacted to anti‐Chinese sentiment and the anti‐Chinese movement of the late 1800s by creating community groups and advocacy organizations to help support their community and to advocate for their rights. These organizations continue today alongside many new groups and pan‐ethnic Asian Pacific American groups that help to support this growing ethnic community and advocate for issues of importance such as equity and political representation and provide leadership to the Chinese and Asian Pacific American community.
